What effect does coke have in operation?

Cross-country is a tendency coaches advise runners do not drink pop, at least season, due to its negative effect on the ability to execute. From what I read, this is mainly attributed to the carbonation, sugar and caffeine. How does carbonation affect the execution, in particular. It causes joint pain? Is it slow down? Please do not respond to a vague or uninformative, and please cite a legitimate source. I am looking for people who know what they're talking about.

The gas in the carbonation can cause cramps. The sugar and caffeine is actually a plus. Frank Shorter, Olympic gold medalist in the marathon in '72 (And the silver in 76) uses coke devoid as there were no sports drinks available in those days. I do not remember where I read this and are as capable as I am of this research. But I think you can see the logic behind of my answer. Coca-Cola produces only empty calories, quick energy and gas is not as complicated a product.
